Sexism roundup

February 23, 2008 · 7 Comments

Sometimes the best stuff is in comments. At Madkane’s:

Obama’s sexism did not go unnoticed in this small corner. I am continuously outraged by his condescending manner, about which the pundits never comment, while they take Ms. Clinton apart over every little detail.

Most recently, when he was challenged to a debate, his response was something like “my ten point plans are set forth on my website.” That is not a debate, Mr. Obama. His response is more subtle sexual bias in simply refusing to engage, reflecting the attitude that you Woman just are not as smart as or good enough for me Man to bother with you Woman.

Obama is getting more than a gender-bias pass; he is getting a free pass as everyone tippy toes around him to avoid any possible malinterpretation as racism.

His condescending attitude has bothered me since the beginning of the campaign. Madkane offers other places of support:

So where’s the blogger outrage over Obama’s sexism? Lots of luck finding it among the A-list bloggers — the male ones, at least. They have a much better time of it interpreting everything the Clinton team does as racist.

Sure, there’s some great commentary about Obama’s sexism over at Taylor Marsh’s blog and at Talk Left. But in the main, Obama’s getting a gender bias-pass.

More supportive posts, comments and a great name, “Something like The Southern Strategy with Vaginas.” A comment on Alas puts a finger on exactly how I feel:

While I know she is no angel, my support is still very much going to Hillary. For me though, it started back when the youtube debates occurred several months ago, where I first got a glimpse of the smug, patronizing behavior that it seems like Barrack and his handlers feel he is hiding from the public. I couldn’t put my finger on it then, but at this point, I’m willing to call it deliberate politics, and its of a dangerous sort where women are concerned. Along the lines of marketing and code that moves masses, I’d recommend the feminist book “Can’t Buy me Love” by Jean Kilbourne. Double-speak takes a whole new meaning after that read.

Shakesville on caucuses:

Someone has also emailed me private accounts of older female Hillary supporters who reported being intimidated, shouted down, and outright bullied by younger male Obama supporters while caucusing. (Shades of the virtual world, in which female Hillary supporters have been effectively run out of dKos.)

Corrente:

I went to Barack Obama’s website to see where he stands on reproductive rights and women’s issues in general.

There were no gender issues to be found among the twenty topics featured on the site’s menu, nor among the six “additional issues.”

Well, there was one gender issue: sportsmen.

Words like “condescending,” “Southern Strategy,” “deliberate politics of a dangerous sort where women are concerned” and “bully[ing].” This is not “oversensitivity.” You should know by now I don’t talk about stuff unless it’s important. My point is the Southern Strategy with Vaginas is just as bad as the Clinton racism strategy but no one tells the Obama campaign to stop because it raises the specter of stereotypes of men of color. So shouldn’t he not engage in the strategy in the first place? We get back to the “you Woman just are not as smart as or good enough for me Man to bother with you Woman” attitude in the first comment otherwise known as sexism. Like dnA said, he should cut it out.
